About Us

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. —Deuteronomy 6:4-7 NIV

In Discipleship is a faith ministry of the Central California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. In Discipleship got its start in 2002 as Kids In Discipleship (K.I.D.), a ministry of the Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church, and later transitioned to the Georgia-Cumberland Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in May of 2011. K.I.D. continues to make up the core of In Discipleship.

In Discipleship recognizes the need for disciples of all ages, and is dedicated to equipping children, youth and adults with the tools they need to nurture a personal, meaningful and fruitful relationship with Jesus Christ.

In Discipleship offers tuition-free training and coaching to grow disciples of Christ. These materials are available to any denomination, race and people group.

Mission & Vision

In Discipleship is an intergenerational ministry calling young and old to:

    1.  Be a disciple of Jesus Christ

    2.  Unite in discipling others to Jesus

    3.  Serve through their God-given vision

In Discipleship Values:

    - The authority of the Bible to test all beliefs and practices.

    - Calling young and old to a personal revival of living faith in Jesus.

    - Jesus Christ as Friend, Savior and Lord.

    - Daily time alone with God through prayer and the Bible.

    - Jesus’ call to everyone to be a disciple.

    - The urgency to make disciples in preparation for the soon return of Jesus Christ.

Our History

In March 2002, Pastor Don MacLafferty was hired by the Georgia-Cumberland Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, the Southern Union, and the North American Division to launch a pilot project in child discipleship. The Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church in Collegedale, Tennessee became the launch site and the ministry began.

Since then, the Kids in Discipleship ministry has grown tremendously. The ministry is now represented in 9 out of 13 Seventh-day Adventist world divisions and has trained hundreds of church teams worldwide.

In October 2011, In Discipleship was created out of a growing need to train and equip all generations to be disciples of Jesus Christ.

  • Delain & Lydia Huggins - Media

Delain and Lydia Huggins love using their talents and abilities to produce photos and videos that inspire, encourage, and uplift! Their upbeat spirit and enthusiasm is contagious as they work in untiring dedication for the Lord.

Delain and Lydia have blessed many with their work both with In Discipleship projects as well as others. Additionally, they also enjoy   “shooting wildlife and nature in general” says Delain. However, they are not intimidated by the “run and gun” style of documenting and shooting events either!

Delain also is involved with designing and maintaining this In Discipleship website.

Delain sums up the passion that he and his wife have by these words, “we strive to honor God in all we do and give what we have to His service.”

Why are we In Discipleship staff members?

We want to use our talents and abilities for God and have a passion to use them in   ministry.  Things we love about In Discipleship include the focus on developing a personal relationship with Jesus and encouraging others to use their God given abilities and talents in service for Him.

  • Don MacLafferty - President, Founder, Director

Don’s top four roles in his life are: a disciple of Jesus Christ, a husband to his wife April, a daddy and life mentor to their three children, and visionary leader in discipling children and families to Christ. Don has celebrated over 21 years with April and they have served God together in pastoral ministry for most of those years. In 2002, Don founded Kids In Discipleship as a pastor at the Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church. He now serves as the Senior Pastor of the Clovis SDA Church in California and the continued President of In Discipleship. Don is passionate about family, the discipleship of children and their parents and the leadership development of those who are called by God to champion these priorities.

Why am I an In Discipleship staff member?

God has called me to boldly champion the discipleship of children to Jesus Christ. I am delighted to be a part of the K.I.D. global movement that God has raised up for this very time!

    Fun Facts about Don:

Don loves hiking, backpacking, canoeing, wildlife photography, gourmet cooking, reading, international travel and meeting the Divine Appointments God provides every day.

    A favorite Bible verse:

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble…Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” Psalm 46:1,10,11

  • Gary Weber

Gary is a healthcare professional and has been involved in healthcare administration for many years. He has been married to his wife, Liz for 35 years and they have three grown children. Gary serves on the Board of Directors of In Discipleship and was recently asked to become the Director for the Southern region of this ministry. He developed his close relationship with God later in life and would like to encourage those of all ages to have that close relationship and to realize the potential they have to positively shape the lives of those with whom they can share the love of Jesus.

Why am I an In Discipleship staff member?

I feel it is important for individuals of all ages to know Jesus as their friend and to have a close and meaningful relationship with God. I feel it is especially important for children and young people to experience this at an early age. To a very large extent this is encouraged or discouraged through the influence of parents, teachers and others of significance in their lives. I wanted to become involved in this ministry because it is dedicated to providing education and tools that benefit not only children but those of all ages in mentoring others in their relationship with God.

    Fun Facts about Gary:

Gary enjoys gardening, camping, home remodeling and spending time with family and friends.

    A Favorite Bible Verse:

"I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For He has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness… " -- Isaiah 61:10

  • George Carr

George says - I grew up in a Christian home but for nearly forty years I lived in a different world, one without God yet in His love and mercy He brought me back.  Now that I am in His fold again what a blessing it is.

Prior to moving to Clovis, California I was living in Manassas Virginia, where I got re-baptized in November 2009.  Quite unlike my previous life where everything was done for money, God led me to community service.

I volunteered in homeless shelters, homes for battered women and transition homes for the homeless.  In addition as part of my training God got me involved with my local church.  I became a deacon, then an elder and then property/project manager for the church and church school, managing a major school renovation project over a two-year period.

Prior to 2009 I had worked as a consultant in the public sector for over thirty years providing financial advisory and accounting support services.  Clients have included; Fannie Mae, Federal Housing Administration, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Department of Commerce, Federal Aviation Administration and the Social Security Administration.

Why am I an In Discipleship staff member?

I truly believe that God has led me to join the Clovis church and to be a part of In Discipleship. When Pastor Don told me about it I had very little knowledge about what the program was all about. But I was a seeker and since joining I have grown spiritually and now I finally understand what it is to be a disciple. As God continues to lead in my life, I want to disciple others.
